Shown seated and turned to the left, with pen in hand as if mid-sentence, Booker T. Washington appears in this c1906 portrait at the height of his national influence. The print is an unmounted stereograph, one of a pair of nearly identical photographs meant to be viewed through a stereoscope, a format that was widely popular in the early 1900s. By then Washington was president of the Tuskegee Institute in Alabama, a school he had led since 1881, and his 1901 memoir, *Up from Slavery*, had made him one of the most recognized Black Americans of his day. Portraits like this one circulated widely, shaping how the public saw him.
