Seated and turned to the left in three-quarter length, the Argentine writer Jorge Luis Borges appears in this 1962 portrait from the New York World-Telegram and the Sun newspaper files. By the early 1960s he was known internationally for story collections such as *Ficciones*, and his work had reached English-speaking readers in translation. The sitting falls in the years when his reputation was growing well beyond Latin America, and newspaper portraits of writers from that period typically ran alongside reviews and feature stories. Borges, born in 1899 and dead in 1986, lost most of his sight in his later decades, a fact that shaped much of the work he produced afterward.
