This portrait shows Pvt. James Daniel Gardner seated in three-quarter length, turned slightly to the left, and it belongs to a group of pictures of Medal of Honor recipients. The record places it around 1900, when the Library of Congress was assembling images of African American achievement, many gathered by its assistant librarian Daniel Murray for displays of Black accomplishment at the 1900 Paris Exposition. Its inclusion in the collection reflects the effort to document Black soldiers' service and to challenge the way their military record was often ignored.
