This portrait shows Hugh Lenox Scott in uniform, standing three-quarter length and turned slightly to the left, at a time when he was based on the Texas border. Scott commanded troops in the El Paso area while the Mexican Revolution spilled across the frontier, and the W.H. Horne Company, a local firm, issued the picture as a postcard for the many visitors and soldiers passing through the city. Scott later rose to become Chief of Staff of the U.S. Army in 1914, and the card captures him during the years when that career was taking shape. He was also known as a student of Plains Indian sign language, a detail that adds depth to a figure remembered mainly for military service.
