Shown in three-quarter length and turned to the left, Louis Freeland Post stands in the formal pose common to professional studio portraits of the 1890s and 1900s. Post, who lived from 1849 to 1928, was a lawyer and editor who championed Henry George's single-tax ideas through his Chicago weekly, *The Public*. The mount bears the name of Coover, a Chicago studio, which places the sitting in the city where Post was most active at the time. Later, as Assistant Secretary of Labor under Woodrow Wilson, he drew wide attention for his handling of deportation cases during the postwar Red Scare.
