Sigmund Freud and his future wife, Martha Bernays, appear together in this June 1885 carte de visite, posed three-quarter length and facing left. The couple had been engaged for about three years by then, and Freud's medical career in Vienna was still in its early stages. Cards like this were widely exchanged and kept in albums, as this one was, so the small format reflects the social customs of the period as much as the sitters themselves.
