Shown standing in three-quarter length and turned to the left, this Dyak man was photographed in Singapore, a busy port where travelers from Borneo and across the region passed through in the early twentieth century. "Dayak" is a broad term for many Indigenous peoples of Borneo, so his clothing is the clearest clue to his own community. The portrait comes from the Frank and Frances Carpenter Collection, assembled by the Carpenters, American travel writers who documented peoples across Asia for readers at home. Studio portraits like this one reflect both the sitter's presence and an outsider's gaze.
