Lillian Russell, the stage singer and one of the most recognized performers of her day, appears here in a three-quarter length pose turned to the left. The portrait dates to about 1904, a period when Russell was at the height of her fame in American musical theater and her image circulated widely in newspapers, magazines and theater programs. Photographs like this one helped build the celebrity culture of the early twentieth century, when audiences followed stage stars as closely as they followed politicians. Russell, born in 1861 and known for her beauty and stage presence, remained a public figure until her death in 1922.
