Shown seated and turned to the left in a three-quarter length pose, Mrs. William Ashley appears in this 1840 engraving made after a painting by J. Bostock. Engravers of the period often translated a painter's portrait into a black-and-white plate so the likeness could be printed in multiples and reach viewers who never saw the original canvas. Prints like this were popular with families and collectors who wanted affordable likenesses. Worth noticing is how the engraver built up fabric, shadow and light from fine lines rather than paint.
