In this portrait, Walter W. Liggett, the Minneapolis journalist, faces the camera and holds up a copy of *Plain Talk*, the muckraking magazine that carried his exposés of political and criminal corruption in the late 1920s. The picture dates to 1929, when Liggett was building a reputation as one of the Midwest's most combative reporters. He had long attacked city officials and their ties to organized crime in Minneapolis, a campaign that made him many enemies. He was shot to death outside his home in December 1935, and his murder was never solved. The photograph shows him as a man who chose to make his name by publishing the stories others wanted buried.
