Dr. William C. Fowler poses at half length, facing the camera, with an apple held near his chest, a prop that sets this portrait apart from many studio sittings of the period. Underwood & Underwood, the New York firm that produced this print on February 6, 1926, made large numbers of portraits and stereoscopic views for newspapers, magazines and home viewers in the early twentieth century. The catalog's subject heading for apples in the 1920s points to the fruit as the picture's theme, but the record offers no biography to explain why Fowler was photographed with it. The direct, unhurried pose is typical of the firm's portrait work and is worth noticing alongside the prop.
