Peggy Hull sits facing the camera in a military-style uniform, an unusual choice for a woman whose work was reporting on armies rather than waiting at home for news of them. Born in Kansas in 1889, she became a newspaper correspondent and was among the first women accredited to cover the American Expeditionary Forces in France during World War I. The 1931 date places the portrait between the wars, when women who wrote about the military often faced skepticism from editors and commanders alike. The catalog also lists a World War II communications heading, but the portrait itself belongs to the interwar years.
