Robert M. La Follette, the Wisconsin politician who later became one of the leading Progressive voices in the Senate, is shown here seated at a desk, looking straight into the camera in a half-length pose. The picture dates to about 1906, a year when La Follette was serving as governor of Wisconsin and pushing reforms that curbed railroad influence and tightened state regulation, making him a national figure. Its stereograph format suggests it was produced for the popular card-viewer market of the early 1900s, when paired images gave viewers a sense of depth and portraits of public men circulated widely.
