Taken only about two weeks after Calvin Coolidge became president, this portrait shows him seated at a desk in the Oval Office, facing the camera. Coolidge assumed the presidency on August 3, 1923, after the sudden death of Warren G. Harding, and he was still settling into the role when the photograph was made. The image comes from the National Photo Company, a Washington studio that produced many official portraits of government officials during the 1910s and 1920s. Its plain, direct pose reflects the formal style of the period, when photographs like this were used to introduce a new president to the public.
