Shown seated at a desk and turned to the left, Leslie M. Shaw appears in this half-length portrait from about 1905, when he was serving as Secretary of the Treasury under Theodore Roosevelt. Shaw, born in 1848, had earlier been governor of Iowa, and the desk pose suits a career built on public administration and finance. The photograph carries the copyright mark of G.G. Bain, a New York news photographer whose agency produced portraits of officials and other public figures for the press in the early twentieth century.
