Seated in a half-length view and turned to the left, this woman is identified only as the wife of a Singapore millionaire, and the record does not give her name. The print belongs to the Frank and Frances Carpenter Collection, where it is catalogued as No. 118. Carpenter was an American travel writer who photographed people and places across Asia in the decades around 1900. Singapore was then a British colonial port, and its wealthy merchant households played a large part in the city's trade.
