Playwright Arthur Miller sits at a typewriter, turned to the left, with his left hand resting beneath his chin, a pose that suggests a writer pausing over a line rather than typing. Miller, born in 1915, became widely known after *Death of a Salesman* opened in 1949 and won that year's Pulitzer Prize for Drama. The print is probably a press photograph, possibly from Wide World Photos, an agency that supplied newspapers and magazines with images of public figures in the years after World War II, when Miller was becoming one of the leading American dramatists of his generation.
