Warren G. Harding is shown here in a half-length seated pose, turned to his left, in a photograph taken at the Elks' National Home in Bedford, Virginia, around 1920. Harding was then a United States senator from Ohio who would win the presidency later that year, and the setting places him at a fraternal retreat for members of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, a group he belonged to. The image was registered for copyright by the photographer F.H. Richardson, which is why the record carries a Copyright Office number. Portraits like this one were widely circulated in 1920, when political candidates depended heavily on printed images to reach voters.
