Seated at a desk and turned toward the camera, this half-length portrait shows Dwight D. Eisenhower at a moment of transition. Around 1952 he was stepping away from his post as Supreme Allied Commander of NATO forces in Europe and preparing to seek the Republican presidential nomination, a campaign he would win that November. The copyright credit names Lainson Studio of Denver, a reminder that commercial studios produced many formal portraits of public figures during the midcentury decades. Its plain, frontal pose reflects the conventions of official and campaign portraiture of the period.
