Lin Yutang, the Chinese-born writer and translator, sits facing the camera in this half-length studio portrait made around 1936. It came a year after his best-known early book, *My Country and My People* (1935), which introduced Chinese life and thought to American readers. The photograph was registered for copyright by The Davart Co. of New York, and Lin's later essays and language-related inventions made him one of the better-known Chinese voices in the United States.
