Sarah McClendon sits at her typewriter in this half-length portrait from 1962, turned to face the camera. A Texas native, she spent decades covering Washington and became known for sharp, persistent questions at presidential news conferences, which made her one of the more recognizable figures in the White House press corps. The typewriter points to the daily reporting behind that reputation. Portraits like this one document women who worked the Washington beat at a time when such assignments were far less common.
