Thaddeus Stevens, the Pennsylvania congressman and fierce opponent of slavery, appears here in a seated half-length view turned toward the camera. The portrait comes from the Brady-Handy Collection, the large body of work by Mathew Brady's studio and photographer Levin Handy, assembled in the years around the Civil War. Stevens, who led the House Ways and Means Committee and later chaired its Committee on Reconstruction, was among the most powerful Republicans in Washington when this sitting was made. The photograph is a useful record of how leading legislators presented themselves to the public in that era.
