Andrew Carnegie looks straight into the lens in this half-length portrait, with his face and shoulders filling the frame. Born in Scotland in 1835, he rose from telegraph messenger to lead the American steel industry, then sold his company in 1901 and gave away much of his fortune, especially to public libraries. The studio Davis & Sanford made the photograph, and the 1937 date in its record most likely marks cataloguing rather than the sitting. Widely copied portraits like this helped fix the image of the self-made industrialist turned philanthropist.
