Abraham de la Peña appears in a half-length, front-facing pose, the standard format of the small card portraits that circulated widely in the 1860s. The Library's record links him to military service during the European intervention in Mexico, 1861 to 1867, when French forces and Mexican conservatives backed Archduke Maximilian of Austria as emperor. The card was kept in an album of likenesses tied to Maximilian's reign, which shows how such portraits served as both personal keepsakes and political records. Its albumen print on a card mount was an inexpensive, widely used format of the period.
