A sixth-plate daguerreotype shows Edward Wilmot Blyden in a half-length, front-facing pose, holding a book, with his name inscribed on both the case label and the inside of the case. Blyden, born in the Danish West Indies in 1832, emigrated to Liberia in 1851 and became one of the most influential writers and educators in West Africa. The portrait survives within the American Colonization Society records, an organization founded in 1817 to resettle Black Americans in Liberia, which connects the image to that project. The catalog notes that it may be a copy daguerreotype, so its details and provenance are worth reading alongside the image itself.
