This half-length portrait of a Black man facing the camera is number 45 in the first volume of *Types of American Negroes*, an album assembled by W.E.B. Du Bois. The photograph is tagged to Georgia and dates from about 1899 or 1900, when Du Bois was working at Atlanta University and gathering images of Black life in the state. Du Bois organized such portraits and related material into a display for the 1900 Exposition Universelle in Paris, where he meant to replace stereotyped images of Black Americans with dignified, documented ones. The album's contents were later part of the Daniel Murray Collection at the Library of Congress.
