Framed closely from the head and shoulders, this Georgia sitter looks straight into the lens with a calm, direct gaze. He appears in an album of portraits from 1899 and 1900 compiled by W.E.B. Du Bois, then a scholar at Atlanta University, under the title *Types of American Negroes*. The series was assembled for the American exhibit at the Paris Exposition of 1900, where Du Bois aimed to counter caricatured images of Black Americans with dignified, individual portraits. The print is a gelatin silver photograph, a process widely used in the 1890s.
