The sitter is unidentified, but the back of this plate carries two conflicting names: a pencil note reading Henry Dodge and a scratched inscription for Hon. John J. Crittenden. Both men served as U.S. senators in the years before the Civil War, Dodge from Wisconsin and Crittenden from Kentucky, which helps explain the confusion. The half-plate daguerreotype was made in Mathew Brady's studio between 1844 and 1860, when his portrait rooms drew many public figures. Gold toning gave the silvered copper plate its warm sheen and helped protect its delicate surface.
