Few details survive about the sitter of this daguerreotype, so the picture rests mostly on its materials and its moment. Made in 1844, it is a direct positive on a silver-coated copper plate, which means the image is unique, with no negative to print from more copies. The process had been announced in France only about five years earlier, and portraits like this required sitters to hold still for several minutes in strong light. Notice the sharp detail of the dark coat and bow tie, and the mirror-like surface that shifts from image to reflection as you tilt it.
