A sitter in a dark coat and bow tie gives this 1851 daguerreotype its character, with the formal dress of the period set against the mirror-bright silver surface that defines the process. Daguerreotypes were made on copper plates coated with silver and sensitized with iodine and bromine vapors, producing a single, unique image that could only be viewed at the right angle to catch its reflections. By 1851 the process had been public for roughly a decade and was widely used for portraits, since sitters could afford a studio visit where exposures often ran from several seconds to a minute or more. Notice the sharpness of the detail in the fabric and face, which is one of the process's signature strengths.
