A daguerreotype from 1851 shows a bearded man in a dark coat and bow tie, a sitter whose name the record does not give. Daguerreotypes were made on polished silver-coated copper plates, so each one is a single unique image, and this kind of portrait was the fashionable novelty of the early 1850s, when studios in cities across the United States and Europe were busy with middle-class sitters. The formal dress and full beard reflect the styles of the period. Because the plate is one of a kind, its surface and tonal range are worth examining closely in person.
