Only a number, 312, scratched into the back of the plate, identifies this quarter plate daguerreotype, and nothing in the record names the sitter, who appears head-and-shoulders and facing forward. The picture came from the studio of Mathew Brady, whose New York operation was among the best known daguerreotype portrait businesses of the 1840s and 1850s. Gold toning, a chemical treatment applied to the silver surface, deepened the image's tones and sharpened the features. The plate was transferred to the U.S. War College in 1920 before entering the Library of Congress collection.
