Few details identify the sitter of this small sixth-plate daguerreotype, but the number 379 scratched into the back of the plate, and its transfer to the Library of Congress from the U.S. War College in 1920, give it a traceable history. The portrait was produced in the studio of Mathew Brady, whose New York and Washington rooms were among the best known of the 1840s and 1850s. Daguerreotypes like this one, with the head-and-shoulders pose turned slightly to the right, were prized for their sharp detail and mirror-like silver surface, which shows the most when the plate is tilted under light.
