The sitter in this 1844 daguerreotype is a man whose name has not survived, so his identity remains unknown to viewers today. Daguerreotypes were made on silvered copper plates, and each one was a single unique image that had to be tilted to the light to show its positive picture rather than a reversed one. By 1844 the process had been public for only about five years, and portraits like this were often kept as personal keepsakes in small protective cases.
