This portrait shows a man whose name has been lost, so the picture survives as a direct record of one stranger's face. It dates to 1840, only a year or so after Louis Daguerre publicly unveiled his process in 1839, when photography was still new and exposures took minutes in bright light. Each daguerreotype is a single, mirror-like image fixed on a silver-coated copper plate, which is why it looks different depending on the angle and light. Portraits from these first years are rare, and the sitter's stillness and serious expression reflect both the long wait and the formal manner of the period.
