This daguerreotype shows an unidentified man, and its 1840 date places it within the first years after Louis Daguerre's process was made public in 1839. Early portraits like this one required sitters to hold still for minutes in bright light, which is why faces in the period look so fixed and serious. Each plate is a single positive image on polished silver-coated copper, so it cannot be copied the way later negatives allowed, and it is worth looking closely at the surface, where the image shifts between positive and negative as the angle changes.
