Little is recorded about the sitter beyond the fact that he remains unidentified, but the plate is dated 1850, about a decade after Louis Daguerre introduced his process in Paris. Each daguerreotype is a single image fixed on a silver-coated copper plate, which is why it reflects like a mirror and must be tilted to be seen clearly. Sitters of the period often had to hold still for minutes in strong light, sometimes steadied by a hidden head brace. Such portraits were usually kept in small protective cases, so many survive through family keeping rather than through any written record of who was pictured.
