Nothing in the record identifies the sitter of this 1844 portrait, so the image has to carry the story on its own. It is a daguerreotype, one of the earliest practical photographic processes, which fixed a likeness on a polished silver plate. Sitters of this period often held still for minutes while the exposure was made, and the plate's mirror-like surface means the image shifts with the light and rewards a close look at the clothing and expression.
