The brass mat stamped "A. Washington, 136 Main St., Hartford, Conn." links this daguerreotype to Augustus Washington, a Black photographer who ran a studio in that Connecticut city during the 1850s. The plate passed into the Library of Congress through the American Colonization Society records, an organization founded in 1817 to resettle Black Americans in Liberia. The sitter remains unidentified; the catalog offers Alfred F. Russell as a tentative match, based only on resemblance to another plate. The sixth-plate size and three-quarter pose are typical of portraits made between 1854 and 1860.
