The brass mat on this sixth-plate portrait is stamped "F. Grice," a maker's mark that sets it apart from many unlabeled daguerreotypes of the period. The unidentified sitter is shown three-quarters length, cropped around the knees, a common studio pose in the mid-1850s. Daguerreotypes were unique images fixed on silvered copper, and their mirror-like surface shifts in tone as the viewer moves. By about 1855 the process was still popular, though glass negatives and paper prints were starting to replace it.
