A brass mat stamped "Ball & Thomas, 120 W. 4th St., Cin., O." ties this portrait of an unidentified man to a Cincinnati studio of the 1850s. He stands three-quarters length before a painted backdrop, a common studio prop that suggested a room or landscape without the expense of building a set. The case is decorated with mixed flowers surrounded by scrolls, and a Rinhart hallmark identifies the maker of the case. The same sitter appears in another daguerreotype in the Library of Congress collection, so the two can be compared side by side.
