A brass mat stamped "Ball & Thomas, 120 W. 4th St., Cin., O." places this quarter-plate daguerreotype in a Cincinnati studio of the late 1850s. The unidentified sitter, posed three-quarter length before a painted backdrop, also appears in another daguerreotype in the Library's collection, so the two can be studied together. The case is decorated with mixed flowers set within scrolls, an ornament typical of the period that made the object a keepsake as well as a likeness.
