This half-length portrait shows Philip Phillips (1807-1884), a lawyer and Alabama congressman, turned three-quarters to the left. The image is a half-plate daguerreotype, gold-toned to deepen its tones and protect the silvered surface, and it was produced in the studio of Mathew Brady, whose portraits of prominent Americans were among the most widely circulated of the 1850s. The record notes that it may be a copy, meaning it was likely made by photographing an earlier image, a common practice of the period. Its later transfer to the U.S. War College in 1920 is one of several routes by which these early plates reached institutional collections.
