Facing left and framed from the head to the shoulders, this unidentified sitter appears on a quarter plate daguerreotype, a small silvered copper plate that gold toning strengthened and warmed. The plate came from Mathew Brady's studio, which drew many of the era's politicians, writers and military men to its New York rooms before the Civil War. The record also notes a 1920 transfer to the U.S. War College, and the picture now belongs to the Library of Congress daguerreotype collection.
