A cased daguerreotype from around 1850 gives us a man whose name has been lost, but the object itself tells a good deal. Daguerreotypes were made on a silver-coated copper plate, so the image is a single mirror-like positive that shifts from positive to negative as you tilt it under light. The head-and-shoulders framing was typical of portrait studios of the period, where sitters often held still for several seconds in strong daylight. Its protective case, usually leather, wood or thermoplastic, is part of what makes these early portraits survive so well today.
