This head-and-shoulders portrait shows Alice Rogers Hager, a journalist born in 1894, photographed in 1945 and turned squarely toward the camera. Hager built her career writing about flight and travel during the decades when commercial aviation was expanding quickly across the Americas, and she wrote for a general readership about the people and places that aviation was reshaping. A 1945 portrait of a working writer like her is a useful reminder that wartime and postwar America had a large, active corps of women reporters and authors, many of whom covered subjects that men of the period often treated as their own.
