Taken in 1928, this head-and-shoulders portrait shows James Wolcott Wadsworth facing the camera squarely, in the formal pose common to official portraits of the period. A New York Republican, Wadsworth was born in 1877 and died in 1952, and he served in the U.S. Senate during the 1920s. The photograph was made at the Washington studio of Underwood & Underwood, a firm that supplied many portraits of politicians and public figures to newspapers, so the picture shows how lawmakers were presented to the public between the world wars.
