Surgeon George Huston Chapman, born in 1849, faces the camera in this head-and-shoulders portrait made at S. Anderson's studio in New Orleans. It is a carte de visite, a small photograph on a card mount that was popular from the 1860s into the 1880s and often traded like a calling card. A note on the back names Kentucky as his home state, though the town is uncertain, and in 1894 John Boyd Thacher requested portraits like this one for a collection tied to the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition.
