Hand-colored, this quarter-plate daguerreotype shows Ethan Allen Hitchcock (1798–1870) in uniform, facing the camera. Hitchcock was a career U.S. Army officer and a grandson of Ethan Allen, the Revolutionary War leader of the Green Mountain Boys. The engraved mark on the plate identifies T. M. Easterly, a daguerreotypist in St. Louis, Missouri, as the maker, and the portrait is dated 1851. Hand-coloring added tints to the silvered surface, a practice that made these small portraits look more lifelike.
