This quarter-plate daguerreotype shows Ethan Allen Hitchcock in a head-and-shoulders view, facing the camera directly. Hitchcock (1798-1870) was a career U.S. Army officer who served in the Mexican War and later became a Union general during the Civil War. The portrait is attributed to Mathew Brady's studio and dates from roughly 1853 to 1859, when Brady was building a large gallery of prominent Americans. Daguerreotypes like this one are unique positives on polished silver-coated copper, so their image shifts with the angle of light and is best viewed at a slight tilt.
